Chuck Dowdle, 93, was a teacher in Perham in the early 1950's. Now, he's a published author living in California. His latest book, "Twin Lights," is a rewrite of his life's greatest loss, lived out in Perham, and tells a totally different life story set here.
CROOKSTON I had my first (legal) drink at The Viking bar here. Because its marquee was an image of a Viking ship, the bar was commonly known back then in the 1970s as The Boat.

What year did you work in the Crookston Times newsroom?
I worked in the Crookston Times newsroom (then the Crookston Daily Times) during the summers of 2012 and 2013.
What was your favorite part of your experience at the Times?
My favorite part of working at the Times was connecting with the community of Crookston. I’m not originally from Crookston, and what might seem like just another potluck or just another Night to Unite was a new experience and adventure to me.
What was the biggest thing you learned about yourself and/or the biggest life lesson that you took with you when you left the Times?
$29,000, with Concrete mill and concrete overlay and concrete sidewalk repair on the
South Broadway Bridge deck from
South Main Street to
$350,000 in federal money and
$100,000 in state-aid money going toward the cost. There is no assessment tied to this project.
Assessments, if impacted property owners prefer, are typically spread out over 10 years and paid along with the City share of property taxes, with a nominal interest rate. Public Works Director
Pat Kelly stresses that none of the cost estimates are final as of now, and that when they are completed a public hearing for each project s assessment will be held and impacted property owners will have a chance to ask questions or voice concerns.
