Even then there were only four or five republican members who really came out and said anything sharp about the president. and that is just a reality of where the party is right now. they -- in some ways theyre a lot like some voters in the republican party. they dont like what the president says. they dont like the way he says it. they dont like his tweets. for better or worse they understand that he is their guy and they are loathe to get crosswise with him, which does create this problem, whi...

Falling apart. i dont think we should take for granted this miraculous experiment thats lasted for 240 years, a multiethnic nation that hasnt have to persist if we allow this president to divide us. i dont think we should assume this sticks around for another 240 years. i think its that important. >> have you said that to fellow senators? >> maybe not in those exact words but i think we have all used, you know, our friendships and our relationships across the aisle to explain to them the politic...

Of what the president had to say. this was pretty essential to what he did and what he was about. donald trump has always played with fire as it relates to race. and i would say in the last three to four years he has, you know, not just towed up to that racial line but crossed it on numerous occasions and weve seen. so thats not surprising. i think the second thing not surprising is the republican reaction to it or in many cases the lack thereof. you mentioned mitch mcconnell still not having sa...

He was asked three times whether a policy that is clearly racist is racist, and he was so afraid of getting cross wise with his father-in-law that he waffled three times. he said he knows the president and thats why he works for this president. the president didnt stop being racist when he entered the ovalophilus. he now has a largest platform to propagate racist means and rhetoric against minorities. hes done it consistently throughout his presidency. so while jared kushner said he wasnt involv...

Donald trump is not looking at charges. there will be a ground swell for candidates and i think theyre probably going to get crosswise with each other and with democratic leadership because theyre going to want to hold positive messages and lets not talk about impeachment. here is the bottom line. this guy was elected by 70,000 votes in three states that were almost surely impacted by a number of people who intruded on our democracy. vladimir putin and jim comey. he lost the election, he has sin...

Powerful voice for something like this. i think of the mitt romney tweet today and mitch mcconnell who mentioned mccain, no mention of president trump. so many republicans specifically have been so silent. >> well, not only silent on mccain but silent on a lot of things that they privately dont like about donald trump. a bunch of them about a dozen of them voted against national emergency declaration in the senate and that, you know -- that was a large number for senate republicans, but on somet...

Resolution, understand that your state has many -- has many projects that the president could siphon money from and youll be exposed on that issue. >> why do you think theyre not doing that? what are they afraid of? >> i think the president gets the base ginned up and many members, republican members, unfortunately, are looking over their right shoulder. theyre worried about a primary or maybe a presidential tweet and getting cross wise with the president. this is a simple issue of separation of...

During the plea, you lied to me before and you would like mercy. she did say, perhaps you are not trying to persuade me. had you done so, you would have written me letters like everyone else or have a conversation about why you wanted to show remorse. perhaps the audience you are going for is someone else. she was alluding to the president for obvious reasons. >> she pointed out he pleaded guilty to these charges here in washington, d.c. there was no trial. they avoided a full-scale trial. as a ...

Things, i think they put themselves in great jeopardy. >> former speech writer for george w. bush, penned a recent article that criticizes republicans for sinking further into trumps cesspool. and francesca chambers. good evening to you both. peter, when you see what republicans put up with and whats happening here, whats your analysis of what you call the cesspool and whether this is a real opposition. >> well, i dont think it is really an opposition. there are isolated cases, there were 13 rep...

It on the floor for practice. it was passed and then the president reneged and the democrats have using that fact against the republicans throughout the negotiations, and as things stand right now, and again, the republicans are looking down the barrel of the vote that is similar the to o t they have taken, mitch mcconnell does not want to take a vote and at the same time not get crosswise with the president. and so it is worth remembering that the context of all of this will change, because the...
