improvement on their part in terms of communications abilities. alisyn: that is a major shift, conor powell, thank you very much for that from libya. bill: same part of the world, new word that al-qaeda has plans to get involved in that war in libya, urging muslims to fight both the nato forces and qaddafi s troops. and apparently, this word went out to several countries even before the air war started. we ll talk to retired major general james spider marks about that and how it could change the fight and the future for al-qaeda and libya. it s a big story crossing the wires this morning. we re on that in a matter of minutes. alisyn: back at home there s a high stakes battle over whether or not to raise the debt ceiling, it s playing out on capitol hill. did president obama play politics on this very issue when he was a senator? bill: also the president is proposing billions in cuts to medicare in order to tackle our crushing debt. what could happen when you go to the doctor s office w
eligible for those payments. and now to washington, where the president is set to sign that bill that kept the government up and running. both the house and senate passed the compromise legislation that nearly caused a shutdown last weekend. now to the bigger battle. over the next year s budget and of course, the nation s crushing debt. the two parties have radically different views of what should be cut. there are going to be some areas where we can agree now and there are going to be some areas where we don t agree, but we can get a process going. we re going to have to make some tough choices. and the sooner the better because our children will have to make much, much tougher choices. aside from the 20 2012 budget rather congress will have to decide as soon as next month to allow the government to borrow even more money. that will surely trigger a bitter partisan battle. there could be fireworks at a rally in madison, wisconsin, tomorrow. sarah palin will be at the state
democratic claims including those for majority leader reid that if it were not for the tea party, congressional leaders would have stricken a deal a long time ago. they want us to deal with this crushing debt that will crush the future for our kids and grandkids. there is no daylight there. let s look at newel poll newspapers. the latest nbc news/ wall street journal poll shows they differ pretty dramatically. 68% of self identified democrats want their leaders to make compromises. here by comparison, 56% of republicans want their leaders to stick to their position even about it means not striking a deal. if there is a government shutdown, the survey finds that there will be plenty of blame to go around. 37% of americans would fault republicans, 20% blame democrats and 20% would blame president obama. the obama administration warned 245 a government shutdown could
