NEW ULM Cullen Slette, son of Katie and Trevor Slette, won both the local and the district 2020/2021 Patriot’s Pen essay contest. An eighth-grader at New Ulm Middle School, Cullen received $100 as the local winner and $200 for his performance at the district level, which includes 35 VFW posts, ranging from the suburbs of the Twin Cities to as far south and west as Jackson and Lakefield.
Patriot’s Pen is an annual youth essay program open to students in grades 6 through 8, and the topic of the essay varies from year to year. This past year, more than $1.4 million was awarded to winning essays. New Ulm/Sleepy Eye VFW Post 1648 will contact local school districts this fall looking for interested students. Please contact your local VFW post for more information.
