A corruption trial for a former high-ranking Democratic state legislator and Albuquerque public school administrator will be held in January. Court records show the trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 2, 2024. Sheryl Williams Stapleton is accused of racketeering, money laundering and other accusations made public in July of 2021. The state attorney general's office says the delay is due to changes in judge assignments, as three judges had rescued themselves from the case. Defense attorneys and prosecutors also sought more time to review documents related to the case. Williams Stapleton is accused of diverting money from Albuquerque Public Schools and using her legislative position for personal benefit. She has denied wrongdoing.
