Not every band needs the thrills of the live stage to make music. And some bands, like local synth pop group Course, don’t even need to be in the same room. “A Late Hour,” the group’s debut record out now, is a testament to the power of creative isolation. From the deserts of Texas to their tiny apartments in the heart of Chicago, Course (comprised of lead singer Jess Robbins, drummer Chris Dye, synth player Dan Ingenthron, guitarist mikey Russell and bassist Brian Weekly) managed to cra...

Happy Birthday (Merge) by D.C.s Sneaks (aka Eva Moolchan). You can also detect the influence of musical acts such as Le Tigre and tUnE-yArDs. All of these elements combine to make a thrilling listen. Sneaks gives us plenty of opportunities to work out the kinks in our bodies, as well as plenty to think about, in irresistibly rhythmic numbers such as "Faith," "This World," "Do You Want To Go Out Tonight," and "Mars In Virgo." If you havent checked this album out, do yourself a favor and listen -- and watch some of their beautifully made videos -- below. Its end of the year and everybody seems to be making Top 10 lists, but Lomas three members have offered us slightly unusua...

Loma (members of Shearwater and Cross Record); the terrific debut album from techno pop artist Ela Minus; the third album from Ty Segalls proto-metal-influenced trio Fuzz; the new album from jangle S.F. power-poppers Latitude; and Gruff Rhys has a new memoir on the way. There are LOTS more albums out this week than those four, and Andrew reviews some of them (including two from Big Thiefs Adrianne Lenker) in this weeks Notable Releases. More Basement-approved stuff from this week: the doub...

The List: Stereoboards Best Albums of 2020 Monday, 14 December 2020 Written by Stereoboard Well, that was weird, wasnt it? 2020 will not be fondly remembered (aside from one particular bloke losing a big job) and 2021 is starting its race with some ground to make up, but as we locked down and stayed home the soundtrack was excellent at least. So much good music made its way into the world over the past 12 months, reminding us of what we have to cherish and also what we potential...
