Cave Receives Five Years Probation in 2020 Stabbing Incident

ROCK SPRINGS Alexander Vincent Ray Cave, 28, of Rock Springs, received five years of supervised probation today in Third District Court for his involvement in a stabbing incident back in January 2020. Cave was originally charged with attempted second-degree murder in the stabbing of Rafael Magana, but later pleaded no contest in exchange for a reduced charge of aggravated assault and battery last year. The maximum sentence for aggravated assault is 10 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. Sweetwater County Attorney Dan Erramouspe sought financial restitution in the amount of just under $75,000 in the case, which Judge Suzannah Robinson granted. He was originally sentenced to 6-10 years in the state penitentiary, but that sentence was reduced to probation and the restitution amount.

ABC 20/20 Featuring Dating Game Killer Shares Local Ties

The ABC News feature show 20/20 will air the story of infamous Dating Game Killer Rodney Alcala Friday night, and part of that feature includes his connection to a Sweetwater County murder case. Alcala is listed having as many as 130 victims including 28-year-old Christine Thornton in 1977. Thornton and her boyfriend were traveling from San Antonio, Texas to Montana to pan for gold, but the couple broke up, and the last time the boyfriend saw Thornton was in Green River. Thornton was pregnant at the time, and some time after she left her boyfriend, she crossed paths with Alcala. Alcala, posing as a young photographer, persuaded Thornton to take portraits in a desolate area just outside of Granger. Her remains were found by a southwest Wyoming rancher in 1982, but weren’t identified for more than 30 years.

Nomis Receives 3-7 Years in State Penitentiary for Felony Theft

GREEN RIVER  Former Green River Fire Department Chief Mike Nomis has been sentenced to 3-7 years in prison for the theft of nearly $60,000 from the department. Nomis was arrested along with his wife Stephanie back in May after a lengthy investigation revealed the couple stole nearly $100,000 from the GRFD Foundation coffers from 2017-2019. Nomis initially pleaded not guilty to one felony theft count and one misdemeanor count of misappropriation of public property. He later changed that plea in September, and had his sentencing today. But Third District Court Judge Suzannah Robinson said the aggravating factors in the case outweighed the mitigating factors and that probation was not appropriate.

WyoFile: Cops, Towns, Counties and Industry Divided Over New Health Orders

Personal beliefs and local politics are driving inconsistent, often contradictory responses to Wyoming’s health orders from law enforcement, local elected officials and business leaders. In the expanded public-health orders signed Dec. 7, the state left enforcement of both a mask mandate and a bar and restaurant curfew to local officials. The orders drew wide support from the state’s principal industries, healthcare organizations and even its Republican congressional delegation, but the reactions of would-be enforcers across the state have been far from universally cooperative. Mark Gordon and State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist as unenforceable because it would require law enforcement to assess someone’s medical condition.
