The state Department of Economic Opportunity on Friday estimated the state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate was down from 5.0 percent in August. The rate was down 2.3 percentage points from September 2020, when the state was completing its reopening after COVID-19 pandemic closings that began in March 2020.

While the state has ramped up efforts to push people back into the labor force, it has also seen the number of people leaving jobs jump from 193,000 in Sept. 2020 to 264,000 in Sept. 2021.

"If [employers] are having trouble hiring, they have to get creative," says Department of Economic Opportunity Secretary Dane Eagle.

The state also saw some improvements in its leisure and hospitality industry.

In September, Florida's unemployment rate dropped .1%, making it 4.9% versus 5% in August. Florida's ranking as the 29th lowest state for unemployment by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics remains the same.

The state has made efforts to nudge unemployed Floridians back into the workforce, to little avail.

Gov. Ron DeSantis directed the Florida DEO to request the indefinite suspension of collection on non-fraudulent Reemployment Assistant overpayments.
