Lawmakers Look Into Ways To Help Unemployed Gig Workers

The Florida computer system that frustrated millions of unemployed Floridians seeking jobless benefits will likely take up to $244 million to fix and maintain over the next five years, a state consultant says.

State Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Dane Eagle told a Florida Senate committee on Monday that the two-year cost to fix the troubled unemployment system alone would be over $73 million.

More than $73 million is needed to revamp Florida’s much-criticized unemployment system, which was overwhelmed in the initial weeks of the pandemic.

The  executive order states that doctors, registered nurses and pharmacists may vaccinate people "determined by a physician to be extremely vulnerable to COVID-19." This means that anyone who has a high-risk medical condition can receive a coveted shot, but not at a state or county-run site. Doctor offices and participating pharmacies like those at Publix, Walmart and Winn Dixie are authorized to inoculate "at risk" patients.
