It may soon be illegal to watch street races in Santa Ana.
The City Council provided initial approval Tuesday to an ordinance that allows the police to target spectators who are knowingly attending a street race within 200 feet of the event. Although a violation of the ordinance may include a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, the city must first provide a written warning to any accused spectator.

It was the kind of classic car cruise that Daniel “Dano” Patten would have loved to film.
More than 100 cars drove down the streets of downtown Huntington Beach on Wednesday night, cruising through the fog down Pacific Coast Highway from Warner Avenue to Brookhurst Street.
The only thing missing was “Dano.”
Surf City Classics car club held a memorial ride starting at Lake Park to honor Patten as well as another late member, Tommy Simpson.
Patten, was a well-known Huntington Beach-based videographer who shot video of car shows and other Surf City events for his “Dano Live” YouTube channel, which has more than 10,000 subscribers. He died on Christmas Day.

Huntington Beach photographer at illegal street race struck and killed on Christmas Day [The Orange County Register]
Dec. 27 A photographer who documented Southern California car culture died at an illegal street racing event in Carson Friday, Dec. 25, after two vehicles veered into spectators.
Daniel “Dano” Patten, who lived in Huntington Beach, was fatally struck on Christmas day at about 1:30 p.m. near East 230th and Banning Streets in Carson, his brother, Orange resident Russ Patten said. Daniel Patten was filming drag races at what sheriff’s officials said was an illicit gathering.
“I did tell him on Christmas, when we talked, ‘Be careful going out to the street races, ” said his friend, Irvine resident Brian Almas. “A couple of the guys who were with him said, ‘Hey Dano we need to leave, this is dangerous today. ”
