good morning, everybody. it is thursday, september 15th. i'm betty nguyen alongside alex witt. hillary clinton is set to return to campaigning today with events in north carolina and the capital, washington, d.c. she spent three days off the road, recuperating at home in chappaqua from pneumonia. her doctor released more details on her medical history, including she takes a common blood thinner after that concussion three years ago resulted in a blood clot. the report mentioned a tube put in her ear of january this year after a sinus and ear infection. her physician otherwise says she's healthy and fit to serve as president and that, quote, she is in excellent mental condition. for days, donald trump stayed away from questions about clinton's health, but last night he brought up the question of her fitness once more. >> i really have no view. i just hope she gets better and can get back out. i have no view. you know, i just don't want to get involved with it. i hope she's going to be fine and continue onward. >> in all fairness, she's lying in bed getting better, and he want her back on the trail, right. it is hot, and it's always hot when i perform because the crowds are so big. these rooms were not designed for this kind of a crowd. i don't know, folks. you think hillary would be able to stand up here for an hour and do this? i don't know. i don't think so. i don't think so. >> donald trump also revealed more about his own health in a taping with dr. oz set to air today. >> if your health is as strong as it seems from your review of systems, why not share your medical records? >> well, i really have no problem in doing it. i have it right here. i mean, should i do it? i don't care. should i do it? [ applause ] it's two letters. one is the report and the other is from lennox hill hospital. >> may i see them? >> yeah, sure. those were all the tests just done last week. >> if elected at age 70, you'll be the oldest person to ever enter the oval office. why do you think you have the stamina for the job? >> just about the same age as ronald reagan. and hillary is a year behind me. i would say just based on my life. i've had -- i actually -- and i don't know if this makes sense. i feel as good today as i did when i was 30. >> trump also apparently talked about his blood work, which he says is normal. he says he gets cancer screenings annually. dr. oz also said the candidate is slightly overweight. trump said he likes fast food because at least he knows what's in it and that his campaigning was his exercise and moving his arms around was a workout. experts say the physical he received is really more of a snapshot of his overall health and that he has revealed far less than nominees in years past. we should mention that his running mate mike pence is set to release a record from a physical that took place earlier this summer. also, tim kaine released a medical summary from his doctor yesterday. well, it was a bit of an awkward visit to flint, michigan, for donald trump yesterday. trump was interrupted several times while speaking at bethel methodist church. one person asked him whether he ever discriminated against black tenants to which he responded, no, i never would. there was also this moment when he was interrupted by the church's pastor after launching into an attack on hillary clinton. >> hillary failed on the economy, just like she's failed on foreign policy. everything she touched didn't work out, nothing. now hillary clinton -- >> mr. trump, i invited you here to thank us for -- >> oh, oh, okay. >> -- not to give a political speech. >> that's good. okay. >> trump also visited the water treatment plant at the center of the lead crisis and thanked the, quote, very, very good executives there. he got a chilly reception from the start. flint's mayor urged him not to visit. here is the warning from other local leaders. >> flint today is playing a role to host a candidate donald trump, who now is the new donald trump, not the donald trump that we all knew during the primary. >> now that we are less than two months from election day, he's coming to our city to attempt to pivot his message, and we won't stand for it. we have been denied clean, safe water for over two years. we want donald trump to know that we need a real solution to this crisis, not empty rhetoric or more of the same of his run government like a businessmenalty that led to this crisis in the first place. >> mr. trump, i've got one question for you, and it's a pretty simple one. where the hell have you been? he's been missing in action. he hasn't lifted one finger for the people of flint. we know the truth, and the truth is donald trump doesn't give a rip about flint. so my message today is pretty clear. donald trump, go home. >> it used to be -- think of this. is this true? it used to be cars were made in flint, and you couldn't drink the water in mexico. now the cars are made in mexico, and you can't drink the water in flint. >> overnight, donald trump reacted to colin powell privately, calling him a disgrace with racist views. hacked e-mails reveal the former secretary of state and retired four-star general's blunt observations about both trump and democrat hillary clinton. but it was trump who responded just before midnight last night. quote, i was never a fan of colin powell after his weak understanding of weapons of mass destruction in iraq equal disaster. we can do much better. this as more correspondence showed powell venting his frustrations with clinton, forcing him to disclose his private e-mail use and shedding light on the world of private speaking fees. in a july 2015 e-mail to his broker, powell wrote, i had a gig canceled because the client, a public university, caught hell from overpaying hrc. hillary clinton is the gift that keeps on taking, he concluded. he also brands her as a greedy, not transformational figure troubled by hubris. in a 2014 e-mail, powell wrote of clinton, i would rather not have to vote for her, although she's a friend i respect. well, there are just 54 days until the polls open. only 11 days until the first debate at new york's hofstra university. yesterday the commission on presidential debates announced that data from facebook and google will help shape the questions by looking at people and what they're searching for and saying about the race. as the candidates prepare, new jersey governor chris christie, one of donald trump's topped advisers, was tight lipped about debate prep when speaking to brian williams last night. >> debate prep for donald trump is for donald trump. it's not for me to be coming out here and talking about what we do to prepare. when we are with him, there's no holds barred. myself as one of the folks who have been there on occasion, the fact is we get to ask whatever we want. we ask thing we hope will have him be as rei did as possible for the first encounter on september 26th. >> on another note, the jury has been selected in the trial of two former high-ranking appointees to new jersey governor chris christie over orchestrating a traffic jam at the foot of the george washington bridge. last night on the 11th hour with brian williams, christie opened up over whether he thinks the scandal known as bridgegate cost him a spot on the republican ticket. >> how much of a factor do you believe the trouble with the bridgegate was a factor in you not getting picked for vice president? >> i'm sure it was a factor. >> how big? >> you'd have to ask him, but i'm sure it was a factor. >> is there anything you fear with former aides of yours taking the stand in the trial? >> not a thing. i've been investigated by everybody for the last three years, including by this network. no one has ever been able to prove that i knew anything or had any role in this, and this trial will just confirm that. but there will be critics who will never want to believe that because they want to believe something different. >> well, donald trump will be in new hampshire today, where for the first time in a century, the state's largest newspaper will not be endorsing the republican nominee for president. instead, the union leader is backing libertarian candidate gary johnson. the newspaper's publisher, joseph mcquaid, has been critical of donald trump and writes in part, trump is a liar, a bully, a buffoon. americans are being told that we have to choose the lesser of two evils. no, we don't. this is johnson's third newspaper endorsement. "the richmond times" came first on september 3rd, followed by north carolina's "winston-salem journal" about a week later. the presence of third-party candidates chips away at hillary clinton's support slightly more than donald trump's. the poll shows that johnson supporters when forced to choose between clinton and trump choose clinton at a slightly higher rate than trump. 39% to 35%. stein supporters break for clinton more. for more news of the day, let's bring in lewis berg jcdor. >> well, let's start in a florida where a fire was intentionally set at a mosque. the suspicion fire broke out early on monday. the mosque was occasionally attended by omar mateen, the gunman that killed 49 people at an orlando nightclub. if convicted, he could be sentenced to 30 years in prison. and the man accused of running down three arizona police officers appeared in court yesterday. mark payne only gave his name as a judge ordered he be held without bond on attempted murder charges. court documents say payne was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time. one officer sustained a broken leg and another a head injury. luckily both officers have been released from a hospital. and to georgia, a grand jury has indicted a former police officer accused of killing a police dog he left in a stifling patrol car. daniel peabody was indicted on two counts of animal cruelty and making a false statement. in june, he allegedly left a 4-year-old inca in the car for almost three hours. an autopsy shows the dog died of heatstroke. peabody is currently free on bond. and according to a new poll from the nonpartisan organization texas lyceum, 59% of texans oppose a border wall between the u.s. and mexico. though imgrmigration is the mos important issue impacting texas, the wall itself is a distant fourth. when it comes to a nation as a whole, only 1 in 100 think border security is the most important issue facing the country, and only 8% say immigration. one last number to throw at you here, a majority of texans say immigration helps the nation more than it hurts. betty and alex? if it benefits his pocket to treat russia positively, then how could he stand up for the u.s.? we have an interest as a nation in promoting stability between india and pakistan, but their suggestion he has business deals there that would benefit him economically, not necessarily to promote stability, but to pick a side rather than doing what the u.s. should do and promoting stability. if we have a president who is paying attention to how's my own bottom line doing, he's going to be paying less attention to building up the bottom line of a house, city, state, or country. and he should make a commitment top frankly shutting down this money-making trump, you know, for-profit organization if he were to become president. >> the clinton foundation says it plans to make big changes to one of its key components if hillary clinton is elected president. now, this comes amid the ongoing scrutiny over the organization's practices. the foundation says the changes would affect the clinton health access initiative, which if clinton won, would be spun off into an independent organization from the main foundation and would no longer carry the clinton name. in addition, five members would step down from its board, including former president bill clinton and chelsea clinton. meanwhile, the clinton foundation is set to hold its final global initiative meeting next week. president clinton announced next month he would step down from the main board to minimize any conflicts. but chelsea clinton plans to stay on that board. speaking with andrea mitchell yesterday, ceo and president of the clinton foundation discussed chelsea's importance to the organization and hit back at pay to play accusations. >> why keep chelsea on the board? >> well, it's chelsea's decision. first of all, chelsea is an extraordinarily important leader on the board. there's no question about it. >> it's keeping it in the family, as it were. >> well, keeping one person in the family on the board, and chelsea has said he wants to make sure we do the transition effectively. she'll have to make the decision about her own future, but there's no question that most of us would love to keep chelsea on the board. she's intelligent. she knows these programs. she has real management experience. and keeping her in a leadership position on the board, i think, personally is very important. there's no question there were phone calls made to get appointments for people, but mohammed yunis, a nobel laureate, melinda gates, these are people any secretary of state would have seen, courtesy appointments. >> business people. >> there's no question about that. but i don't see any evidence that there was policy decisions made as a result of that other than courtesy appointments. >> last night on the 11th hour with brian williams, new jersey governor chris christie compared donald trump's praise for russian president vladimir putin with george w. bush when evaluating the republican party's stance toward america's cold war adversary. >> that view of russia has evolved over time, hasn't it. i mean, i remember the guy who appointed me u.s. attorney and who you worked for said he looked into vladimir putin's eyes and saw his soul. that wasn't ronald reagan rhetoric. yet, no one accused george bush of not being strong. i've been listening to donald trump for 15 years, been friends for 15 years. i know how to hear him. he's never said he likes vladimir putin. he's never said he agrees with his policies. he's never said he agrees with the way he treats his own people. he's said two central things. that he admires his strength and that he's got good poll numbers. now, are any of us shocked that donald trump would mention someone's poll numbers? >> donald trump continued his outreach to minorities yesterday. he toured the flint, michigan, water treatment plant at the center of the lead crisis there and thanked the, quote, very, very good executives. later, he made remarks at bethel methodist church where he was interrupted several times. one person asked him if he ever discriminated against black tenants to which he responded, no, i never would. there was also this moment when he was interrupted by the church's pastor after launching into an attack on hillary clinton. >> hillary failed on the economy, just like she's failed on foreign policy. everything she touched didn't work out, nothing. now hillary clinton -- >> mr. trump, i invited you hear to thank us for -- >> oh, oh, obama, okay. >> -- not to give a political speech. >> we're also seeing that interview trump gave to a black pastor as part of a campaign appearance in detroit earlier this month. the one that was reportedly scripted with prepared questions and answers that was given to "the new york times" days before the taping. >> well, i'm in a rough and tumble world, as you know. as probably we all are in our own ways. but i live in a crazy world, in a crazy life i'm having. and it's been a lot of fun, and i've had a lot of success. i think that's why i'm doing this. i want to bring success to this country. this country is so far behind in so many ways. we're losing it. certainly if you look at the inner cities, even driving up to your beautiful establishment, your beautiful church, you know, you see the closed doors and you see the trouble. i mean, look, that's what i do. one, i'm a real estate person, and i can look at an area and see the trouble. i can see the lack of jobs without looking at the stats. it's very sad. it's very sad to see. i will bring it back. i'll bring the inner cities back. i'll bring a lot of things back that no politicians going to do. >> well, let's take a look at the latest polling in a race that appears to only be getting tighter. a new national quinnipiac poll shows clinton leading trump by five points, but trump is still benefitting from a five-point swing in i had favor last month. her lead shrinks to two when third-party candidates are added in. and new swing state polling shows trump rising as well. a cnn/orc battleground poll of ohio likely voters has trump at 50% in the two-way poll. hillary clinton is at 46%. when expanded to the four-way with third-party candidates, he leads clinton by five points. that's the same margin as a bloomberg poll that came out yesterday. cnn also has a florida poll showing trump leading by three there, 47% to 44%. in nevada, despite a sinking favorable rating, a monmouth university poll finds the race has flipped in trump's favor from july. he now leads 44 to 42. inside the margin of error, but still a major swing. >> let's turn to bids. a major announcement from the one of the largest car makers. ford motors announced it will move all its north america small car production from the u.s. to mexico. the timing of the announcement played out perfectly for donald trump, who was campaigning in flint, michigan, yesterday. >> it was just announced that ford is moving all small car production, all of it, 100%, to mexico over the next two to three years. they'll make their cars, they'll employ thousands and thousands of people not from this country, and they'll sell the cars right through a very weak border. no tax, no nothing. we'll have nothing but more unemployment in flint and in michigan. and a warning for u.s. voters over the economic fallout if donald trump is victorious in the presidential election. hadley gamble joins us live from london. who's offering this warning, and just how bad would a trump administration be for the economy? >> that's right, alex. the kremlin has accused the u.s. president barack obama of playing the, quote, russia card as a political tool against republican presidential nominee donald trump. it's all part of an emerging war of words between russian president vladimir putin and democratic party officials who are, of course, vying to maintain their hold on the white house. now, regardless of what you call this latest row, putin has certainly loomed large over this election in very unusual ways. mr. trump has made no secret of his fondness for russia's strong man leader, and he's even said that putin is a stronger leader than obama and some american military generals. hillary clinton has been damaged by a raft of e-mail leaks from the democratic national committee that american officials have squarely blamed on russia and one of trump's former top campaign officials was let go after news reports revealed his coziness with some of putin's cronies. of course, clinton hasn't been shy about pointing out these connections, and at times she's even implied direct collusion between trump and moscow. while this all may seem like election year bluster, it's important to remember that even as american presidential campaigns grind on, the business of global diplomacy grinds on with it. so the u.s. and russia are managing a very sensitive peace treaty in syria right now. if that goes well, they may begin intelligence cooperation to fight islamic state by early next week. alex? Mia Hall Miller wasn’t expecting a painting to change her life when she wandered through the Art in the Pearl fine arts and crafts festival over Labor Day weekend years ago.
Although the Portland music educator and conductor had never purchased original art before, she liked looking at the sculptures, glass pieces and other works. Once she entered the Lawrence Gallery, however, she says she fell in love. On the wall was a large, mostly blue abstract painting.
“It spoke to me,” says Miller. “I showed an interest in it and I was invited to take it home to try it out. That was a big step for me.”
