The colourful world of the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most astounding and fascinating places on the planet, but it s dying, and so is the city that s the hub of all activity related to it: Cairns. The tourism industry has always been a strong part of the Cairns economy. It developed gradually after World War II, and since then the reef has directly (or indirectly) employed many Cairns residents.
