China's cybersecurity regulator said on Thursday it has fined ride-hailing giant Didi Global Inc more than 8 billion yuan ($1.19 billion), sending a strong message to the internet industry that it is vitally important to strengthen protection of data security and personal information.

The penalty may signal the resumption of Didis normal operations in China.

Chinas internet regulator fined ride-hailing giant Didi Global 8.026 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) for 16 legal violations, calling an end to a cybersecurity probe that lasted more than one year and sending a strong signal that will lay the ground for the healthy development of internet-based platform economy.

Didi Global Inc has been fined more than 8 billion yuan for violating laws, including the Cybersecurity Law and the Data Security Law.

The new rules could require mainland companies to pass a security assessment before transferring data to Hong Kong, experts said.
