Homeless share struggle to find permanent homes

Jayme and his wife, Heidi Probst, understand it all too well now. They and their friends—Heather Norman, her 4-year-old son, Malcolm Norman, and her brother Robert Young—are desperately trying to find rental housing together after a harrowing bout of homelessness during bone-chilling weather this winter. Norman, Young and the Probsts lost their housing and were living in their vehicles before finally landing at the Redwood Motel, 3912 N. Hackbarth Road, Janesville. At $275 a week, the Redwood was the cheapest motel they could find, and it’s draining their meager income. The four eventually hope to pool their resources, move in together and get on their feet again.

Churches get creative for Christmas

BELOIT — This Christmas churches are getting creative, offering everything from an online art project to reservations for live services with music and everything in between. Some places of worship, like St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 212 W. Grand Ave., have attracted some new members this holiday season due to their unique online presence. “I’ve started a Zoom confirmation class for people I have never met before. Even though it’s not ideal times, if we didn’t have to do so much online, we wouldn’t have connected with those people. It’s been a neat thing. Different things work in different seasons,” said St. Paul Episcopal Church Father T.J. Humphrey.
