The season finale video concert, ‘Let it Be New,’ is May 16.
The Cincinnati Song Initiative invites everyone to its free season finale video concert on Sunday, May 16 from 4-5 p.m. ET, celebrating new works from Black composers in its largest commissioning project to date.
The concert features one commissioned song from each of the 10 composers taking part in the inaugural National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) composer mentorship program.
The mentorship program pairs an established art song composer with an emerging and early-career composer. NATS designed the program to encourage the creation and performance of new works. For its first year, NATS reserved the program for composers from underrepresented groups, with an emphasis on Black composers.

The summer of 2020 was a dark time for many of Americaâs performing arts organizations. With theaters and concert halls closed in the wake of a worldwide pandemic, many performers and organizations faced economic ruin. At the same time, the social unrest following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery was taking an emotional toll on artists, especially Black and brown people and members of the LGBTQ community. Celine Thackston, artistic director of Nashvilleâs alt-classical chamber ensemble chatterbird, was keenly aware of the stress facing her musicians, and she had an idea about how to address it.Â

In fall of 2020, NATS selected 10 Black composers to participate in its new Mentoring Program for composers
In October of 2020, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) announced and began its inaugural season of the NATS Mentoring Program for Composers.
The new program was designed to encourage the creation and performance of new works by pairing a celebrated art song composer with an emerging and early career art song composer. For this first year, NATS reserved the program for composers from underrepresented groups, with a special emphasis on Black composers. Together, composers Tom Cipullo and Lori Laitman are overseeing the program, and NATS is happy to provide an update and share how the program is progressing so far.
