A trade group for U.S. authors has sued OpenAI in Manhattan federal court on behalf of several prominent writers accusing the company of unlawfully training its popular artificial-intelligence based chatbot ChatGPT on their work.

Several legal novelists, including John Grisham and Scott Turow, are among 17 authors joining with the Authors Guild in a proposed class action lawsuit against the artificial intelligence program OpenAI.

OpenAI and other AI defendants say data scraped from the internet qualifies as fair use under US copyright law

The authors called the ChatGPT program a “massive commercial enterprise” that is reliant upon “systematic theft on a mass scale.”

The Authors Guild, and a group of prominent fiction authors including Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, and Jodi Picoult have reportedly filed a class action lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that its AI technology is infringing on their work.

The proposed class-action lawsuit joins several others from writers, source-code owners and visual artists against generative AI providers
