Newborns and their mothers that may have been exposed to tuberculosis. This after a santa clara hospital in the San Jose Hospital tested positive for tuberculosis. Laura anthony is live from the Medical Center with more on the story. Laura . Reporter hi, dan, this nurse has no symptoms but she did test positive for active tuberculosis. So hundreds of adults exposed to her over three months will be screened, the babies actively treated. Not every baby born during this time was exposed to the employee with tuberculosis. Stopping short of calling it an emergency, officials at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center say its important they proactively treat 350 infants after they were possibly exposed to a nurse with active tuberculosis. Infants have an immature immune system. They dont necessarily localize the infection to their lungs. It can unfortunately get into the bloodstream and travel throughout the body.
