Tens of millions of people in North America are being urged to wear face masks outdoors after large areas of the US and Canada were blanketed by thick smoke from wildfires.

Poorer people and many communities of color already at higher risk of particle pollution in their everyday lives, experts say, are disproportionately being impacted by this latest wave of smoke infiltrating the region from hundreds of Canadian wildfires.
