Unique seal swimming patterns could inspire new underwater drones This competition is now closed Unique seal swimming patterns could inspire new underwater drones Advertisement While biologists have long known that seals and sea lions have had two different methods for swimming, the reason behind this has been a mystery. By using cutting-edge engineering alongside footage of animal behaviour, scientists can now explain the origins of efficient swimming in the animals. Seals ...

How seals adapted to move through water Collaboration of zoologists and engineers solves seal “evolutionary riddle”. Have you ever wondered how seals learned to perform their skilled underwater acrobatics? Zoologist David Hocking, formerly of Monash University and now curator of vertebrate zoology and palaeontology at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, did, and says he has now helped “to solve an evolutionary riddle at the heart of seal evolution”. Seals and sea lions propel themselv...

Share New research combines cutting-edge engineering with animal behaviour to explain the origins of efficient swimming in Nature’s underwater acrobats: Seals and Sea Lions. Seals and sea lions are fast swimming ocean predators that use their flippers to literally fly through the water. But not all seals are the same: some swim with their front flippers while others propel themselves with their back feet. In Australia, there are fur seals and sea lions that have wing-like front flippers speci...

Few fish can outswim a seal. Seals fly through the waves, predators in their natural element. But, unlike fish, seals are air-breathing mammals whose ancestors only returned to the water from a life on land some 30 million years ago. On entering the water, seals had to adapt both their bodies and behaviour to become efficient underwater swimmers. Like penguins and sea turtles, they use streamlined limbs to propel themselves through the water. Yet, there is a mystery here. Even though all seals...

Researchers have discovered how seals and sea lions evolved to swim. The findings could have potential implications for improving the design of man-made machines such as underwater drones and submersibles. Using cutting-edge engineering and animal behaviour, scientists have explained the origins of efficient swimming in the animals. Seals and sea lions are fast-swimming ocean predators that use their flippers to “fly” through the water. But not all seals are the same – some use their fron...

To any man or woman who wishes to serve our country. such grotesque and character assassination if allowed to proceed will dissuade competent people from service. nature lindsey graham says he is willing to listen to professor ford on thursday. >> i feel sorry for her. i think she is being used here. people in my view are using her. if she truly wanted to be noms, the person who brought this accusation to the public owes her an apology i will do the following listen to her and make a decision. >...

Personally i think this issue will fade. whether the trading bergdahl for the taliban leaders, that issue will fade. it is complicated, republicans and democrats are both a little bit mixed up. i think the bigger issue for secretary clinton and what makes republicans mad is this notion that president obama ignored congress and is acting once again like the imperial president and many republicans and independents want to know whether hillary clinton is -- is going to be that kind of president or ...

If you look at what the factors were going into the decision, of course there are competing interests and values. one of our values is, we bring everybody home off the battlefield the best we can. it doesnt matter how they ended up in a prisoner of war situation. >> it doesnt matter? >> it does not matter. we bring our people home. >> david hocking, a senior editor at roll call. good to see you. >> nice to see you arthel. everyone is hanging on everyones word at this point and it is much about s...
