PITTSBURGH – All season long, St. Cloud State has been exceeding expectations.
Picked to finish fourth in the NCHC, the Huskies men s hockey team took second in both the regular season and conference tournament.
Seeded second in the NCAA Northeast Regional, St. Cloud State beat No. 3 seed Boston University and No. 1 Boston College by a combined seven goals.
And now the Huskies will play for the NCAA Division I national championship after their dramatic, 5-4 victory over Minnesota State Mankato on Thursday in the Frozen Four semifinals at PPG Paints Arena.

Forgive Heather Weems if she s been walking around with a little more pride than usual over the past week or so. The sun is shining, we got some baseball and softball going, and we re headed to the Frozen Four, the St. Cloud State athletic director said, basking in the glory of the Huskies men s hockey team s triumph in the NCAA tournament.
Weems is not alone among Minnesota athletic directors in her joy. Counterparts Kevin Buisman at Minnesota State Mankato and Josh Berlo at Minnesota Duluth also saw their teams earn spots on college hockey s biggest stage, the Frozen Four.
Riese Gaber score goals for the Fighting Hawks to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead and lift the Fighting Hawks to a 5-3 win over the Huskies.
“Those five minutes (first 5 minutes of the third period) just killed us,” St. Cloud coach Brett Larson said. “When they (UND) smell blood, they’re on you. That’s what good teams do.”
The Frozen Faceoff championship, coupled with UND’s Penrose Cup trophy as NCHC regular-season champion, marked the first time in the eight-year history of the league that one team has one both championships. It was also the first time UND has won the Frozen Faceoff.
