Time Machine: Meet Phyllis Fleming. She did it all in 45 years in The Gazette s newsroom Phyllis Fleming’s desk was usually cluttered, although she never had trouble finding anything when she wanted it. She cleaned it off in August 1988, and it was such a surprise, a Gazette photographer was summoned. Fleming worked in The Gazette newsroom for 45 years. A native Iowan and University of Iowa graduate, she was a reporter, city editor and Sunday editor, retiring as the paper’s assistant managing editor in 2002.
