SOUTH BEND â Jack Foos was scared.
He had been diagnosed with cancer of the larynx and underwent surgery to remove his voice box in January of 1995.
âIt was a very scary moment in my life,â Foos, 84, recalled.
He had reason to be afraid. A cancer of the larynx diagnosis meant Foos would have to have a laryngectomy â a procedure in which doctors remove the larynx. The larynx is the part of the throat that contains the vocal cords, which allow people to produce sounds. The larynx also connects the nose and mouth to the lungs and it keeps things you eat and drink out of the lungs.
