Sandra Day O’Connor, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 to 2006. She was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. A moderate conservative, she was known for her pragmatism and for her dispassionate and meticulously researched opinions. She was the author of several books.

For me, and for generations of female lawyers like me, Sandra Day O’Connor inspired our entrance into the legal field.

Ms. O’Connor became the first woman to serve as a majority leader in a state legislature, the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court and used the posts to crusade for women’s rights

Her embrace of the rule of law and empathetic jurisprudence are sorely missed.
