NZ Herald
A South Auckland community leader is left wondering what needs to happen for gun violence to be eradicated from his hard-hit suburb.
Manukau ward councillor Alf Filipaina struggled to find the words to express his sadness and exasperation after a man lost his life in yet another shooting incident overnight.
An armed man was shot by police after a stand-off at a home in Avis Ave, Papatoetoe.
Police have revealed when he eventually came out of his home, he was brandishing his weapon at officers who shot him. Despite emergency surgery the man died in Middlemore Hospital.

Police have revealed a gunman unexpectedly came out of his house brandishing a firearm moments before he was shot by officers.
Counties Manukau district commander superintendent Jill Rogers revealed at a press conference this morning that attempts to negotiate with the man had proved unsuccessful when suddenly he appeared outside his Papatoetoe home. The male unexpectedly exited from the house. He was still holding the firearm and brandishing it around and continuing to display his erratic behaviour, at which time he was shot by police, said Rogers.
Turia was on bail awaiting sentencing in the Manukau District Court, scheduled for March 26. The charges he faced in that court included committing burglary with a weapon and preparing to commit a crime in a public place,
Stuff understands. He had another hearing set down from March 18 in the Papakura District Court for another matter. Turia was a ‘501’ deportee, sent to New Zealand from Australia in 2017 under the controversial section 501 of the Australian Migration Act.
