Western Cape MEC for transport and public works, Daylin Mitchell has met with the taxi industry in the province on Thursday to discuss the criminal acts of extortion taking place.

With a fleet of 135 minibus taxis, the service, which transports residents to COVID-19 vaccine sites, is currently deployed at districts across the province.

Atlantis residents now have access to free transportation to the Saxonsea vaccination site after the Atlantis Red Dot Taxi Service launched in the community on Monday.

The provincial taxi task team is investigating a shooting incident at the Joe Slovo taxi rank last Wednesday morning (22 September), described by residents as another flare-up of violence that has plagued the taxi industry.

The B97 taxi route between Paarl and Mbekweni has been closed for another two months. Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works Daylin Mitchell announced his decision last Thursday (23 September). The decision took effect on Saturday.

The new arch bridge weighs a whopping 8,000 tons and is 113 metres in length, reaching an altitude of 22 metres.

While the Red and Blue Dot Taxi initiatives are a step towards the long-term goal of a formalised industry, calls have been made for fairness in the allocation of vehicles on routes, to avoid violent tensions rising again in the taxi industry.
