The 24-hour total shutdown called by the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) in protest against the delay in holding elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) was enforced by KSO Moreh.

Tribal students of Manipur strongly condemned the arrest of ATSUM leaders on Tuesday.

Manipur MLA Ram Muivah on Wednesday called for releasing of the student body leaders who are under police custody, to bring an amicable solution between the government and ATSUM.

Five members of the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) were picked up by Imphal West police Tuesday morning ahead of its proposed bandh called to press for tabling and passing of the Manipur (Hill Areas) ADC Bill, 2021 recommended by the Hill Areas Committee.

ATSUM has decided to intensify its agitation from August 5.

A consultative meeting of ATSUM, KSO-GHQ, ANSAM resolved that the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) recommended Autonomous District Council (ADC) Bill 2021 should be tabled in the Manipur Legislative Assembly at the earliest.

The ATSUM pointed out that since independence, the tribal communities in the state have lived as a neglected population despite the guarantees in the Indian constitution through Article 371C.
