DC Comics Black Supermen History: Steel, Vathlo, Kalel, Val-Zod

Superman addressing the situation at hand. Image: Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Eber Ferreira, Jaime Mendoza, Dan Brown, Jason Wright, Blond, Todd Klein/DC Comics As long as the original Superman has had counterparts like Steel and, more recently, Final Crisis’ Calvin Ellis of Earth-23, there have been comics fans who struggled to comprehend—and often pushed back against—the idea of a Black Superman. Advertisement This small-minded and particularly pervasive quirk of the larger Superman fandom isn’t unique to Superman or DC Comics. The reluctance some people have to consider the idea of a Black Superman comes from a similar place as the hostile reactions to Marvel Comics’ Miles Morales and Sam Wilson becoming Spider-Man and Captain America, respectively. It’s not just that people don’t like change, but rather that change in the context of legacy characters’ mantles being passed on is often interpreted as

The Superman of the small screen is the hero we need right now

s, the first prime-time TV series to prominently feature DC’s world-famous Man Of Steel since Smallville leapt—or, rather, stepped—onto the small screen back in 2001. It’s lucky timing, considering network resistance to superheroes and their superpowers has softened considerably over the years, Expectations have been high for Superman & Lois, and not just because it’s “the new Superman show.” Though it’s meant to provide a much-needed burst of energy from a network franchise that has already put its flagship series to bed ( Arrow, mercifully) and is about to begin the process of saying goodbye to one of its most beloved shows (

Superman & Lois recap: Season 1, Episode 4, "Haywire"

It’s hard to beat Superman in a fight. And not just a physical one, but a moral one too. As Lois points out when Clark fails to show up to support her at a town vote on whether Morgan Edge should take over the Smallville mine, Clark always has the most valid of reasons for his absences. When he misses an event, it’s because he’s literally off saving lives. Logically, it’s hard to begrudge that. But, emotionally, it’s hard not to be made to feel small when your everyday human problems are always pushed to the bottom of the priority list.

The Flash recap: Season 7, Episode 2, "The Speed Of Thought"

2 The hour opens with a tribute to the lost Wellses, at which Cisco is mysteriously now present. This only makes the end of last week’s episode feel like more of a missed opportunity, as there doesn’t appear to be any good reason Cisco wasn’t present at Nash’s death...but as we’ll soon learn, the Wells mourning is a bit premature anyway. In any event, Cisco has been working on a portal to the Mirrorverse, but has run into technical problems. In the ensuing spew of techno-babble, it becomes clear that Barry’s thoughts are now traveling at super-speed. He’s figured out the problem, which is that they need to know the location of the three people trapped in the Mirrorverse in order to pull them out.
