The Magruder High School student who pleaded guilty to shooting a 15-year-old during a restroom altercation has been sentenced to serve 18 years of a 40 year sentence by a Montgomery County judge.

18-year-old Steven Alston Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison for shooting another student at Magruder High School. 

Steven Alston Jr. will spend 18 years in prison and five years on probation for shooting his 15-year-old classmate with a ghost gun at Magruder High School.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich says he doesn't think having a school resource officer at Magruder High School in January when a teen was shot inside a bathroom would have made a difference.

DeAndre Thomas, 16, is back at Magruder High School. He was shot in a school bathroom with a ghost gun in the abdomen. He required 10 surgeries to recover.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of the family of the teen shot inside a bathroom at Magruder High School accuses Montgomery County leaders of negligence in removing school resources officers during a time of “significantly increased violence.”
