A bill to extend scholarships to meet student needs at the University of Hawaii’s three four-year campuses remains alive after passing out of the House Finance Committee on Friday.

A college education from the University of Hawaiʻi 10 campuses offers a significant return on investment, no matter the degree type—and has gotten more affordable over the last decade, according to a UH Economic Research Organization (UHERO) report released Jan. 16, 2024.

UHERO researchers found that lifetime earnings are $2.8 million for bachelor’s degree holders, 27% higher compared to those who left the program without a degree.

Degrees earned from University of Hawaii campuses have become more affordable, offering a bigger return of investment over the last decade.

While University of Hawaii tuition has become more affordable over the past 10 years when adjusted for inflation, and the financial benefits of a degree remain strong, college enrollment rates among Hawaii public school graduates have declined since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Designed to accommodate 25 students, the de-centered classroom introduces multiple points of focus, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.

Hawaiʻi’s legislature is looking at a bill that would increase the number of students eligible for in-state tuition at any University of Hawaiʻi campus. HB 919 would allow individuals with a Hawaiʻi high school diploma to qualify for in-state tuition.

The administration is proposing a 2% increase for undergraduates at its Mānoa, West Oʻahu and Hilo campuses in the 2025 to 2026 school year.
