The Indian government has held a meeting with social media platforms to assess progress in tackling the deepfake issue. The 11 "user harms" or "illegalities" flagged under IT rules are mapped to equivalent provisions in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), meaning criminal consequences exist even under current laws. The government has stated that it will continue with its "zero tolerance approach" on user harm.
"The social media companies share our concerns and they understand that deepfakes are not free speech.
