Pinto named NCHC Player of the Year

Shane Pinto s dominant season has been rewarded with his conference s top prize.  The Senators prospect was unanimously named the National Collegiate Hockey Association s (NCHC) Player of the Year after a season in which he led the conference in goals (15) and points (28). In the conference s eight-year history, Pinto became the first player to win the award unanimously. It caps off a special week for the 32nd overall pick in 2019 as he was also named the NCHC s Forward of the Year, Defensive Forward of the Year and was unanimously selected to the First-Team All-NCHC team.  In addition to his impressive goal and point production, the 20-year-old also led the conference with 11 multi-point games, seven power play goals and 13 power play points. His 1.22 point per game average was also the best among all NCHC players.

This season, all eight teams converge on Ralph Engelstad Arena for a single-elimination tournament. FROZEN FACEOFF MOVING TO GRAND FORKS Ralph Engelstad Arena will serve as the host venue for the entire NCHC postseason tournament this year, announced Feb. 8. The tournament will be shifted to a single-elimination championship with all eight teams competing for the league’s autobid into the NCAA Tournament. The quarterfinals begin Mar. 12-13 with the semifinals on Mar. 15 and the title game on Mar. 16. There will not be a third-place game this season.

By Pat Sweeney (NCHC release) Rounding out its individual awards for the 2020-21 season, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) unveiled its top honors on Thursday, with North Dakota claiming two of the four awards, while St. Cloud State and Western Michigan also each captured a major award. North Dakota head coach Brad Berry repeated as the NCHC’s Herb Brooks Coach of the Year, while UND sophomore forward Shane Pinto was selected the Conference’s Player of the Year. St. Cloud State forward Veeti Miettinen was bestowed the NCHC’s Rookie of the Year award, while Western Michigan defenseman Kale Bennett was named the NCHC’s Senior Scholar-Athlete for 2020-21.
