their kids to school and things being quote/unquote, normal. well, that s been up-ended because of this delta variant. we ve seen school districts in texas, school districts in other places that are actually shutting down because of the spread of covid. so as much as we would like to believe that all of this is on the up and up and that families are a lot more stable, there s still a lot of uncertainties. and my hope is that state legislatures and congress are going to be able to make the decisions they need based on new information, based on this delta variant surge and not based on information from six months ago whenever this deadline was set. what about the u.s. supreme court that ruled to end the federal eviction moratorium? do you think there will be a public housing crisis? are you worried about a covid crisis as well?
this hour senator manchin setting off a grenade in the delicate negotiations between moderate and progressive democrats on a reconciliation bill, and the reaction has been fast and furious. the deal was that we deliver the entirety of the president s build back better agenda to the president s desk for signing. that means if joe manchin wants to have the infrastructure bill that he negotiated, a much smaller, frankly, bill that doesn t do all of the things that we need to do, then we need to come to a quick agreement on the reconciliation, the build back better reconciliation package. we need to just make sure we actually do what we said we would do for people in this moment of tremendous crises, so many crises that we re facing. and then on the covid front we are still in the thick of the delta variant surge and we are just now starting to hear about yet another variant. it is in most of the u.s. and appears to be immune to vaccines. should you be worried? i m going to get that an
fate is in question, but the reality is setting in here in texas women just spoke to a health-care worker in the clinic behind me. she says their call center turned into a crisis hot line. she says since this law has taken effect, she has had to turn away 70% of the women she s talked to. other states watching this closely. rachel scott, thank you. job growth slowed abruptly last month, just 235,000 new jobbed in august, though unemployment fell to a 18-month low and wages did rise. president biden blaming the delta variant surge and vowing to lay out new steps to fight the pandemic next week, but said the economy is durable and strong. the president s job approval already suffering a hit from 50% in late june to 44% this week, falling six points. the decline reflecting the afghanistan withdrawal while 77% support ending the war, 60% disapprove of his handling of it. we move overseas tonight
about afghanistan over more than a decade, that he is now, and doesn t mind the application being applied to him, an anti-war president. and we re seeing in this new polling what we ve seen previously, which is that americans support the withdrawal from afghanistan after nearly 20 years, but clearly from those numbers, mike, they don t support the way it was conducted. mike clearly. as you think about this president and talk to this white house, what is their sense of the state of affairs, not just with afghanistan but they ve got a midterm election coming up where now abortion is going to be at the center of the conversation. they have to get through a covid surge across the south which we just talked to dr. scott gottlieb, he suspects there may be another delta variant surge headed to the northeast. none of these problems are going away for this president. no, i think they re very
hard constantly from the covid crisis, the delta variant surge, and now this, and now the potential for prolonged power outages. i mean, how concerned are you about the hospital system there? extremely, extremely concerned. i think that you hit on a very important point. they re already stretched beyond capacity. this storm could not come at a worse time, not only for jackson residents, but, you know, people across this nation. and so we will be looking for direction from the state. we ll be looking for direction from our medical personnel to see how we can best support the residents. and so it s just another challenge for our residents to endure. of course it is. the fact that this is hitting, you know, to the day, 16 years after hurricane katrina is just i mean, it s very sad irony.
