The spacecraft, known as DRACO (Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations), is a project being led by NASA and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

NASA and DARPA have selected Lockheed Martin to design and fabricate a nuclear-powered rocket engine.

“This demonstration will be a crucial step in meeting our Moon to Mars objectives for crew transportation into deep space," said the deputy administrator of NASA.

The Draco project will have a nuclear engine that is much more efficient than engines powered by conventional chemical fuel sources for space travel.
