To address remote learning challenges, hybrid program brings international students back to campus

Chan School of Public Health’s Kresge cafeteria masked and socially-distanced to learn from faculty experts about topics ranging from U.S. health policy to cancer epidemiology to decision analysis. The classes are part of a special hybrid program for first-year international students, who were facing a number of challenges with taking remote classes from thousands of miles away, according to Nancy Turnbull, senior associate dean for educational programs, and Sarah Stillman, Office of Education course manager. Harvard Chan’s Nan Laird wins 2021 International Prize in Statistics Nan Laird, Harvey V. Fineberg Professor of Public Health, Emerita, in Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics, was awarded the 2021 International Prize in Statistics in recognition of her groundbreaking work on methods of analyzing data from longitudinal studies. Methods developed by Laird have allowed researchers to “to wring detailed information from large studies that follow participants and collect their data over time sometimes for many decades, such as with the Nurses’ Health Study in the U.S. or the National Child Development Study in the UK,” according to a March 23, 2021 announcement from the American Statistical Association.

Milken officials to launch two doctoral programs this fall

The Milken Institute School of Public Health has begun accepting applications for two new doctoral programs in global public health sciences and health and biomedical data science. Faculty in the public health school said the programs will educate the next generation of leaders in these fields and prepare them for jobs in government agencies or in academia. They said the programs offer an interdisciplinary approach to global public health sciences and health and biomedical data science, which will help attract candidates.
