I am delighted to be here today. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act and honoring the latino lawyers past, present, and future whose struggles and successes represent the vitality and of the root of the Civil Rights Movement. Congratulations to our honorees. You are a credit to the trail braze trail blazing latino lawyers without whom the professor would be talking after lunch. And congratulations to the h nba for putting on such a terrific conference. Respectful of those who have brought us to where we are today, inspiring to those of us who seeks to lead down, and supportive of those who will take us into the future. But an important reminder to us all, the Civil Rights Movement is not a static even from 50 years ago reported on a grainy blackandwhite newsreel. It is
Community. During my years as and americorps vista at the Los Angeles Free clinic i realize that where a child eats, sleeps, place, and goes to school profoundly impact self. I felt the gravity of poverty. I learned the power of resilience. My experience fundamentally changed me. I am now a pediatrician at uc s f Childrens Hospital oakland. [applause] i served a love. Twenty years ago i took a place to make our communities safer, smarter, and healthier. I carry this place with me every day. S. Americorps we elevate our nation by being an indispensable force club promoting resilience in the face of adversity. Together we strengthen american. As americorps and americorps alums we get things done. [applause] my experience and that of nearly 900,000 fellow americans would not have been possible without the wisdom of vision, and perseverance of president bill clinton. More acutely than we do in terms of their citizens having an easier route and path to travel to syria and iraq. They sare the same sense of threat. So the information that were able to share about individuals bhoove traveled to syria or iraq can be used to potentially add to our listing and screening systems and give us one a significant leg up in our effort to disrupt travel when the individuals seek to leave syria and iraq. Thats not a fail safe. Its by no means the only pillar of a defensive effort. Did sense of shared threat is so widely shared at all levels in the governments that we typically work with in europe and its making that level of interchange more robust than it ften is. Have somebody to visit the issue of information sharing. Either in an open session or closed session. Dr. Coburn. Thank you. I hope the media actually listened to what you had to say, nick. A very co gent, open assessment of where we are. Not on the basis to scare people but on the basis to inform them
Sense talented individuals into underperforming schools. The new Justice Americorps will pair lawyers and paralegals with unaccompanied immigrant children to get them legal help. [applause] stem americorps is mobilizing scientists and engineers to inspire young people to discover and tinker and innovate and make things. [applause] businesses brought and nonprofits on board. We have seen again and again how National Service helps people gain valuable skills and training and employers have noticed. We want to do more to help talented National Service members find good jobs after they wrap up their service. That is the idea behind an initiative we are announcing today called employers of National Service. If you are an employer who wants to hire talented, dedicated, patriotic skilled and tireless, energetic workers, look to americorps. Look to the peace corps. [applause] and organizations like the Disney Company at American Red Cross and the city of nashville, united way, and others are s
Strategy. But i think the American People get confused. And if we explain to them, look, boots on the ground means no combat forces. Or boots on the ground mean were not going to do shock and awe or whatever. But we are going to have our people there. And there are certain things that they have to do, and without them, we cant be successful in this battle. And i think i think they can accept that. And they can theyre smart enough to figure it out. And if they think theyre not hearing the truth, the whole truth, i think then they get they kind of get their backs up. I think its also very important that the president give lots of updates. I think, you know, over the last several years, the war in afghanistan, there have been a lot of accomplishments that weve achieved over there. And i dont think the American People know. And i think only the president can tell them that. And i think they would like to know as we move forward how were how were doing in iraq, how were doing in syria. And
