Itâs a question beer drinkers and industry insiders alike ask themselves this time of year: Where will craft beer go in the new year? Will IPAs, hazy or clear, continue to be a market leader? Will fruited sours and heavily adjuncted stouts continue their rise? Will 2021 finally be the year that lagers and pilsners get their place in the sun? Or will seltzers continue to gain prominence and dominate sales? Local beer experts share their opinions. John Paul Meteer, head brewer, Brickyard Bre...

Washington developer Douglas Jemal has completed his previously disclosed purchase of the foreclosed commercial mortgage loan on the Hyatt Regency Buffalo hotel, giving him the inside track to controlling yet another major piece of downtown Buffalo. Jemal did not say how much he paid the special loan servicer, Miami-based LNR Partners, which would use those proceeds to pay off the investors holding the $20.5 million securitized loan. What a joyous day indeed when a restaurant starts offering the distinctive tastes of another culture, allowing me to get out my criticâs crayon and color in another nation or two on Buffaloâs atlas of eating. Despite the last decadeâs arrival of broader and deeper Mexican offerings, South and Central America has been largely terra incognito on the restaurant landscape. Then in November, Tortuga Sandwich Shop opened next to a used record store in Sanborn. Itâs operated by And...

The Erie County Health Department has loosened the rules on who has to quarantine when thereâs a positive case of Covid-19 in school. But now, with lower transmission rates being found in the schools, Erie County has backed off those guidelines. Instead, it will require quarantine for anyone within 6 feet of an inf...

Call it Covid-19 whiplash. A week ago, the biggest question surrounding the local impact of the virus was whether parts of Erie County would be moving into a "red zone" designation, prompting a shutdown of all non-essential businesses. But with the county and Western New York showing multiple days of decline or relatively flat hospitalization levels, optimism has started sprouting that maybe Erie County could change back from the current "orange zone" designation to the less-restrictive "yellow...

Uniland Development Corp. is dropping its plan to construct a transportation, logistics and shipping hub in South Buffalo â as part of a collaborative effort around international trade â because the land it was targeting cant easily support the facilities without prohibitive costs. Instead, the Amherst developer is proposing to build a 5-megawatt solar panel farm on the same 20.3-acre brownfield property at 255 Ship Canal Parkway. Officials are currently meeting with solar contr...

Along the hallways of H.H. Richardsonâs Capitol in Albany, and inside its magnificent Assembly Chamber, Robin Schimminger of Kenmore has proven more than mere mainstay. For 44 years, the Democratic graduate of Cardinal OâHara High School, Canisius College and New York University Law School has worked the room, conducting his lawmaking in that unique manner that includes answering questions with questions (to which reporters have long become accustomed). Schimminger will not report to ...
