SIR – Sir Simon Clarke thinks that changing the leadership of the Conservative Party yet again could result in an election victory (“Rishi Sunak has gone from asset to anchor for the Tories”, Commentary, January 15). If there is some miraculous saviour waiting in the wings to salvage this tumultuous group of people and instil some sense of loyalty, trustworthiness and ability to govern in them, that person is well and truly hidden.

SIR – How exactly have striking junior doctors been helping to save the NHS (Letters, December 22)? They claim to have trained as doctors in order to help their fellow citizens, but have a strange way of doing that. Charles Penfold Ulverston, Cumbria

SIR – Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, has been unveiling Labour’s plans to fix the NHS (report, December 2). They sound plausible enough – except for one detail.

SIR – Thanks to the ineptitude and green zealotry of our political masters, many people cannot afford to heat their homes adequately.

SIR – It takes great strength of character and conviction to stand up and face a baying mob, especially a political one.

SIR – Charles Moore’s description of the Prime Minister’s early actions as “transformative” reminded me of what was said about Tony Blair following his success in the general election of 1997.

SIR – Allison Pearson’s excellent article (Features, November 3) draws attention to the moral collapse of our leading universities.

SIR – In view of the massive gas-price rise and the lack of storage capacity, why have the bureaucrats in office refused permission for Shell to develop its Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea?
