The United Nations’ top official in divided Libya on Monday called for a unified mechanism to lead the reconstruction of a coastal city that was wrecked by devastating floods last month. UN Special Envoy for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily said in a statement that such a mechanism is required amid “unilateral and competing initiatives” by Libyan actors and institutions on the reconstruction of the Mediterranean city of Derna and other flood-impacted areas.

People in eastern Libya are still reckoning with the aftermath of last months floodwaters that washed out to sea the heart of the city of Derna, and killed thousands.

More than two weeks have passed since devastating floods wreaked havoc in eastern Libya, following record levels of rainfall and the bursting of two dams. This disaster has led to thousands of casualties, with many still missing. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) now warns of the immense psychological toll the emergency is taking on those affected, particularly in the city of Derna, one of the areas hardest-hit.
