1. “American Beauty”
Synopsis: A sexually frustrated suburban father has a midlife crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter’s best friend.
Reason to watch again: After 20-plus years, this film still holds its own. With “beauty” in the title and the main character Lester’s obsession with his teenage daughter’s best friend Angela, it seems that the “beauty” is the girl. But upon reflection and noticing all of the red roses intentionally placed throughout the film and the budding love story of Lester’s daughter Janie and her unusual boyfriend, you can see that the beauty is more in the “usual.”
