Detroit Free Press This obituary is part of “We Will Remember,” a series about those we’ve lost to the coronavirus. Malcolm Allen Lewis of Southfield was a dedicated chess instructor who was instrumental in leading students to chess tournament championships throughout the country. He had a lifelong mission of teaching, serving and empowering disadvantaged youth. Lewis, 66, died Aug. 10 before paramedics could get him to Providence Hospital in Southfield. He was presumed to be positive for the coronavirus. Born in Grand Rapids, Lewis grew up in Detroit, attended Detroit Public Schools and was a proud Pershing Doughboy. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1981 and was a co-founder of the annual WMU Alumni picnic in Detroit.
