Amidst an ongoing controversy and potential legal struggle over the Uttar Pradesh government's controversial policy of demolishing the homes of people, overwhelmingly Muslims, who have been accused of participating in communal riots, the state government informed the Supreme Court that no property in the state was demolished to punish people accused of participating in violent protests

The reply from the UP govt came in response to Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind application against the recent demolition drive in Uttar Pradesh. In its affidavit, the Uttar Pradesh government urged the Court to dismiss Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind application saying that it is without merit.

The Uttar Pradesh government said that petitioner Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind has deliberately obfuscated the true facts to paint a nefarious picture of alleged malafides on the part of the administration and that too, without stating any facts on affidavit.

The Uttar Pradesh government has told the Supreme Court that demolitions of illegal structures were carried out by its Kanpur and Prayagraj municipal bodies as per law and were not related to punishing the accused involved in violent protests following remarks by two BJP leaders on Prophet Mohammed.

The petition, filed by Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, was in connection with the recent demolitions of buildings deemed illegal by the state administration in Kanpur and Prayagraj.

The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court that demolitions were not punitive measure and that only illegal structures had been demolished.
