The man found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the 2023 stabbing death of Devonna Walker in Cedar Rapids was sentenced on Friday.

Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks says prosecutors will file about 25 percent fewer felonies in fiscal year 2024, which is the first time violent crimes have declined since post-pandemic spikes. He noted the office also successfully prosecuted eight homicides in the first four months of the year.

The jury finds Shane Teslik guilty on both counts in his voluntary manslaughter trial.Teslik was convicted in the January 2023 stabbing death of Devonna Walker.

Shane Teslik, under cross exam, said he didn’t think it was important to tell police he called Devonna Walker a racial slur before she attacked and assaulted him. He also said he thought calling Walker, a Black woman, the slur would “neutralize” the heated argument between his girlfriend and Walker.
