Court hands long jail sentence to man who caused deadly Laagna tee crash

On Monday, the Tallinn-based Harju County Court handed a long jail sentence to Isa Khalilov who caused an accident that killed two people and injured several others on Laagna tee on June 20 last year. The court handed 20-year-old Khalilov a 10-year prison sentence and his fellow accused, 29-year-old Vjatseslav Kalasnikov, a three-year prison sentence. North District Prosecutor Diana Helila said in late April said that the guilt of Khalilov and Kalasnikov in causing a road accident with grave consequences has been proven and that they should each be handed a 12-year prison sentence. The prosecutor also requested that Kalasnikov be deprived of his driver s license for three years. Khalilov cannot be deprived of his license as he has never been issued one.

Court sets precedent for cyclists at fault in collisions with pedestrians

Prosecutor Diana Helila told AK she was unaware of any analogous court decision in Estonia happening before. The case involved a a cyclist traveling at speed down a minor country road in the village of Kaunissaare, Harju County, who suddenly changed their path to avoid a sleeping policeman -type speed bump, crossing to the other side of the road in the process. The cyclist then hit a woman walking in the same direction, causing her serious injuries. The cyclist was subsequently found guilty of causing injury through negligence. Diana Helila said: An outcome depends on what kind of injuries an individual suffers collision with a cyclist. If the victim suffers minor injuries, then the incident does not constitute a crime, but rather a misdemeanor.
