Tobago Chamber of Commerce president Diane Hadad has reiterated her call for a review of the country’s financial system in the wake of the Government’s decision to restrict gathering and some business activity to deal with the latest covid19 spike.
Hadad said financial institutions need to amend its arrangements with clients, as business owners and employees continue to suffer losses owing to the covid19 measures.
She said the uncertainty of the economic climate would pile more debt on already struggling entrepreneurs.
At the Ministry of Health’s covid19 briefing on April 14, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh announced that beaches will be closed for three weeks. He also announced a ban on public in-house dining at restaurants and cinemas.

Tobago Chamber: Time to overhaul financial sector
Diane Hadad
Finance Minister Colm’s Imbert’s dismal overview of Trinidad and Tobago’s economy reflects the need for an overhaul of the country’s financial sector.
This was the view of president of the Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce Diane Hadad as she weighed in on Imbert’s virtual news conference on Wednesday.
Imbert painted a gloomy picture of TT’s economy, saying revenue for the first four months of fiscal 2021 was $2 billion less than anticipated.
This was due, in part, to the ongoing negative effects of covid19.
As a result, Imbert said the country’s main priority was to save jobs and maintain essential services. Requests for wage increases and backpay also cannot be considered, given the state of the economy.

Although long lines of shoppers can be seen outside of supermarkets and other establishments in Tobago, business owners say this has not necessarily translated into increased sales for Christmas.
They reiterated businesses continue to be negatively affected by covid19.
“Basically, what we are seeing is people moving around. But, of course, you can’t use that as a gauge because if you look at the outside of all businesses, you would see lines now,” Kurt Warner, managing director of Penny Savers Ltd, told Newsday.
