A new law will bring change to driver's education programs with the hope of protecting teens getting behind the wheel for the first time, after one Oklahoma City family suffered heartbreak and tragedy.

One thing, though, is becoming clear: Many of those volunteers and businesses are not pleased with the city's lack of transparency on the Shaffer Park decision. To the best of my knowledge, this issue has not been discussed in open session with members of Hillsboro City Council. The mayor never formally announced Gregory's hiring at a council meeting. Why not? For a new $58,000 city position, shouldn't city council – and the city's residents and taxpayers – be informed?

During the county’s Dec. 12 executive committee meeting, Bingaman said agency officials from CPS and DHHS are aware of the situation.

C. Richard “Dick” Shaffer touched the lives of many in Altoona and Hollidaysburg. The Belle Vernon native established roots in Blair County when he began his teaching career in 1964 at Altoona Area High School, where he stayed for 34 years. A social studies teacher, Shaffer was admired and respected by his students. Former colleague and current AASD teacher Kim Shope remembers Shaffer for his profound presence in the classroom.
