it s been more and more difficult problem for us, and we won t repeat let e s not giv up too much of our leverage from the start. you can say the same thing of china, right? we opened to china in the 70s. we have robust economic relations. it hasn t changed the regime s hold on the society. so i think colin powell said this morning, of course, we should have relation was cuba. we have relations with many countries that are equally oppressive. it s still better, better for the cubans and better for us, and it s very important for our relations with the rest of latin america. this has been a steady thorn in our side in working with other latin american countries, and they are overjoyed, and this is going to allow us to do more in latin american politics overall. either this works and by having this limited relationship, getting more internet in, more telecommunications in, a bit of economic engagement, it sets in motion the kinds of trends we want to see. this is the trojan horse
really important debate because the first amendment is absolutely critical to the future of any democracy and it straits a strong one from a weak one. the first thing parties do to take a democracy to be less democratic hugo chavez who was less democratically elected was take over the press that disagrees with him and shut them down. it s an important debate. on the other hand, you have the president of the united states who has a sworn obligation to uphold the national security. leaks coming out of the military being published in the press about sensitive negotiations with the cia is doing in afghanistan and he has to figure out how to stop those leaks to preserve national security. it s a very, interesting, difficult problem. it s fascinating. rick, obviously, off the record conversations happen all the time between the media and government and other entities but they do require a certain benefit of the doubt to have them, correct?
addressed to all of the former administrators of the drug enforcement administration just over a week ago made it very clear that federal resources would be used to enforce the federal controlled substances act, and, remember, that marijuana is illegal under that federal law. i think that makes a lot of sense. other options are certainly being explored by the justice department, but those are really questions best addressed to them. the president and you want to end this idea that the country is fighting a war on drugs. let me give you another opportunity. you did it pretty well the last time you were here. let me give you another opportunity to explain the administration s position on this. sure. for 40 years, we ve talked about it as a war on drugs, and i tried to end using that phrase a long time ago. people get frustrated. they think of war as a war on people. this is a really, complex, difficult problem that we have
belgium, italy and i believe spain? right. one threat vectoring from pakistan. another threat vectoring from the south, and north africa. now, a third one from the arabian peninsula. the biggest issue with border security is that there are no real borders inside the european urine. in western europe, once you have a passport and visa to go into one country, you can go into all of them. that presents a much more difficult problem for law enforcement because if you have a german national trained in pakistan or some other place and then comes back into western europe, they did move around. these are the type of people that don t appear on anyone s terror database which makes them so much more dangerous. and the u.s. state department is warning all american traveler to be aware of what s taking place in europe right now. roger cressey, thanks. you bet. i want to go back to kerry sanders. he has more on the miners.
