Coquille Chief Don Ivy dies, after battle with cancer - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

OREGON The Coquille Tribe is in mourning, after Chief Don Ivy died Monday, after a seven month battle with cancer. The City of North Bend says he was 70-years-old and had been Chief since 2014. The city says he was well-known in Oregon, as a champion of the Indian people and a scholar of tribal heritage. Governor Kate Brown released the following statement Thursday: “I was incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Chief Don Ivy today. For many years, I counted him as a friend and trusted advisor, turning to him most recently to serve on Oregon’s Racial Justice Council–the mission of which aligned with his life’s work: dismantling the structures of racism that have created disparities in our society.

Bootleg Fire nears 300k acres, prompts more evacuations - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

LAKE COUNTY, Ore. The Bootleg Fire is now estimated at 298,662 acres and is 22% contained. Crews battling the fire say the east side of the fire continues to be problematic.  Additional evacuation levels have been implemented in Lake County due to increased activity on the Bootleg Fire. There is a Level 2 “Be Set” notice for Forest Service Road 29 and Hwy 31 Junction to the top of Government Harvey Pass, east to Slide Lake Trailhead, and back north to Hwy 31. This includes the Monument Rock Area. There are now Level 1 “Be Ready” evacuations for Picture Rock Pass, the Ana Subdivision, the communities of Summer Lake and Paisley, south of Paisley along Clover Flat Road to Moss Pass.

Helicopter fighting Lava Fire crashes into Lake Shastina, pilot survives

LAKE SHASTINA, Calif. A helicopter fighting the Lava Fire performed an emergency landing into Lake Shastina Wednesday afternoon. The Siskiyou County Sheriff says the pilot was able to swim to shore and is safe. Shasta-Trinity National Forest says the pilot is currently being assessed and the cause of the crash is under investigation. There were no other passengers onboard.
