Tigers 9, Cubs 8: Opposite day Share this story Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports This recap should have been headlined “The Matt Duffy game” and sung the praises of the guy Jed Hoyer signed for just $1 million. Duffy went 3-for-5, smacked a three-run homer and matched a career high with five RBI, and it all went for nothing when the Cubs lost to the Tigers 9-8 in 10 innings. I’ll just get this out of the way right now, too — we gotta kill that placed runner rule with fire. If you have to...

The Cubs go for two straight in Detroit.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Sunday 5/9, 1:20 CT Share this story Sunday notes... IT’S BEEN A WHILE: The Cubs go for a homestand sweep this afternoon. The last time a Cubs team swept an entire homestand of six games or longer was August 6-13, 2015, when they did it in a seven-game homestand, a four-game sweep of the Giants followed by a three-game sweep of the Brewers. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Cubs reliever Dillon Maples turns 29 today. STARTING SOMETHING: Through the five four games o...

Does David Bote know how to walk a game off or WHAT?! After a roller coaster affair that had me writing (and re-writing (and re-re-writing)) this enhanced box score many times over, the Chicago Cubs came out on top, sweeping the double-header, and guaranteeing just their third series win of the year. Against the Dodgers, no less. Javy Baez brought us into extra, extra-innings with a monster two-run shot, and David Bote (would it be anyone else?) walked us off. Again. Ah. What an absolutely grea...

2021 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Games 29 and 30 Share this story Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports Statisticians will continue to tell us that clutch isn’t a thing. Well, let me say that isn’t right. Obviously, in every sport we see clutch performances. Be it a superstar or just an ordinary guy on the team, sometimes they rise above the moment and come through spectacularly at exactly the right time. We canonize those people. No one can ever forget Michael Jordan’s shot against the Cavaliers...

2021 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 28 Share this story Sam Greene via Imagn Content Services, LLC Sunday afternoon’s game was a wild one. Both teams ended up using nearly their entire roster. There were 10 homers. There was a player carted off the field. There were lead changes. There was a catcher playing third (after the injury) and a pitcher pinch hitting. Unfortunately, there was also a Cubs loss. There have been too many of them already in this early season. I certainly didn’t follow sp...

Anyone else get completely fooled last night?

The Cubs racked up the hits again tonight, but the results weren’t quite as fun as last night. The Cubs came back a good bit of the way from a deep early deficit, and even got the tying run to second base in the 9th thanks to a wild Reds bullpen (and some would-be-strike-three calls that went their way). Unfortunately they didn’t quite make it all the way back. The Cubs finish the opening month of the season – which was not necessarily an arduous part of the schedule – at 11-15, last in...

A lotta "worst" going on right now for the Cubs.
