"Something Good – Negro Kiss," is a recently rediscovered 1898 silent short film featuring the earliest on-screen kiss between Black actors. Its recent rediscovery begs the question — what other lost pieces of Black film history could be out there, waiting to be found?

A new exhibition at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures highlights how Black cinema, despite the challenges of American racism, has carved its own paths throughout history.

MoMA’s series on film restorations, To Save and Project, is highlighting Black cinema, including what may be the earliest example of African American intimacy onscreen.

“Chicano I & II: The Mexican American Heritage Series” aired on KNBC-TV in July of 1971 and examined history from the Chicano perspective. The program reran once in 1972, then the film reels remained untouched in a garage for 50 years. Now the show’s original host and USC have revived nine of the 20 episodes for the public to view.
