The City of Columbus has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle a federal civil lawsuit filed by Ellen Abdur-Rahim, a protester pepper-sprayed by a Columbus police officer during a 2017 political demonstration. The ACLU of Ohio alleged in the lawsuit that Columbus police violated Abdur-Rahim’s constitutional rights when she was pepper-sprayed directly in the face by then-Officer Justin Masters while already hurt and leaving a peaceful demonstration on Jan. 30, 2017 near the intersection of South High and State streets.

One person is dead after a shooting early Tuesday morning in a parking lot area behind an apartment house near the Ohio State University campus and Greek fraternities.  Columbus police were called at 3:38 a.m. on a report of a shooting in the rear of an apartment house in the 200 block of East 15th Avenue near North 4th Street.  The area is about four blocks from Ohio State s campus and just east of some Greek fraternities on that avenue.

Two people were fatally shot in separate incidents Sunday morning in Columbus, pushing the total homicides committed in the city to 60 in 2021. An unidentified male died after being found shot inside a vehicle early Sunday morning in South Linden. Columbus police homicide detectives say patrol officers responding at 1:48 a.m. to a report of a shooting found the male inside a vehicle in an alley on the south side of 25th Avenue near Medina Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound.
